Remote Open Enrollment

Question 1: What plan changes are expected during open enrollment this year?

Higher healthcare deductibles and premiums may occur due to COVID-19. As a result, employers may choose to offer Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRAs) at greater rates to offset high deductible risks. Similarly, we may see increased enrollment in these accounts by participants.

In addition, employers can take advantage of Specialty Accounts to help employees pay for expenses. For example:

  • Medical Reimbursements
  • Wellness Reimbursements – gym fees, equipment, online subscriptions
  • Tuition Reimbursements – courses, certifications, licensing
  • Specialty transportation expenses not eligible under a Commuter Benefit Plan – bike sharing, ride sharing, car pools
Question 2: How is open enrollment going to be different this year in comparison to previous years?

Things are going to be very different this year. Therefore, plan sponsors should begin looking at the plan renewal process if they haven’t already to help plan their new communication strategy.

In addition, it’s likely that there will be a shift away from in-person enrollment meetings toward virtual enrollment platforms. Fortunately, the BRI Team is well experienced in offering different types of virtual enrollment meetings and benefit fairs.

Question 3: What tools does BRI have to assist plan sponsors in open enrollment?

Employers can use the Resource Center to access educational resources that can assist with open enrollment. For instance, you can find:

  • Email communications
  • Brochures
  • Videos
  • Webinars
  • FAQs
  • Educational documents

Similarly, we have a new eBook “Creating an Effective Benefit Communication Strategy” to help with the shift to a virtual space for open enrollment. Download it here.

As always, you can turn to your dedicated Account Executive for assistance in plan changes or design. We can also assist you with open enrollment by hosting a webinar for current and potential participants or provide you with a custom video. Contact your Account Executive for more information.
