Anatomy of a Successful Open Enrollment Presentation

Open Enrollment Presentation

Open Enrollment is critical to reviewing and updating your employee benefits packages. The right benefits can attract and retain top talent, while the wrong benefits can result in high turnover rates and low morale. As such, it’s essential to consider your Open Enrollment presentation carefully. Whether you’re presenting to virtual or in-person attendees, there are a few key things to remember.

YOUR OPEN ENROLLMENT PRESENTATION SHOULD BE CLEAR AND CONCISE

Employees should understand the offered benefits and how to enroll in them. There are a lot of details to communicate to employees, and it can be tempting to try to cover everything in the meeting. However, overloading employees with information can lead to confusion and make it more difficult for them to make informed decisions about their benefits. Instead, highlight the most crucial information and leave time for questions and discussion. By taking this approach, you can ensure that your Open Enrollment meeting is informative and productive.

BE A STORYTELLER

The most exciting presenters are great storytellers. Introduce a human dimension to the presentation and take audiences on a journey. Never give away all of the answers upfront; instead, spark people’s interest enough for them to want more information or interact with what you’re saying.

USE THE 10-20-30 RULE FOR POWERPOINTS

The majority of audiences say that PowerPoint slides put them to sleep. Keep this in mind and use them sparingly. However, when used correctly, PowerPoint can be a very effective tool, especially when showing figures or complex operations to a large audience.

When developing a PowerPoint presentation, follow the 10-20-30 rule: 10 slides, 20 minutes, and 30-point font. And don’t forget images are more powerful — and memorable — than words.

YOUR PRESENTATION SHOULD BE ENGAGING

Life is too short to read boring slides. Keep employees’ attention by using visuals, stories, and humor. Adding some visual flair to your Open Enrollment presentation will make it more interesting and engaging for everyone in the room! If you want something simple, include images from relevant stock photo sites like Shutterstock or iStock images (think: family photo when discussing health care).

Data is often the best way to tell your story, and you don’t have to be complex! There are plenty of easy ways to include bar graphs or tables, making it easier for employees to understand and select the account that works best for their needs.

Helpful Tip:

Healthcare is expensive, and employees want to know how they can save money on their healthcare plans. Show them visualizations of the difference between one plan vs. another.

ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME FOR QUESTIONS

Allow time at the end or within the presentation for employees to ask questions and discuss. This way, employees can get the information they need to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. Don’t forget about remote employees if you’re featuring a virtual option. Encourage team members to put their questions in the chat so they can participate and get their questions answered. Some people are shy when it comes to asking questions. Plan to have a few FAQs written down to help get the ball rolling and encourage questions.
